I was proposed an interesting question today from a client in regards to when
is the best time to take in protein. This actually is a very good question and a
question that should be addressed. Let's take a look.
As a rule of thumb it is always a good practice to consume protein every 2 to 3
hours. Your body is constantly trying to recover from your previous workouts and
always needs a good constant steady flow of amino acids to repair and recover.
Therefore it is very important to make sure that you take in protein every 2 to
3 hours.
Additionally, the most important times to consume protein are right after you
finish working out, and first thing in the morning. While you are working out,
you are breaking down your muscles and causing micro-tears which need to be
repaired in order for the muscles to recover and gain strength. Studies have
also shown that following a workout, receptors within your body are more
conducive to consuming and assimilating protein than during any other time of
the day. Therefore it is very beneficial for the recuperation process to consume
protein post workout.
First thing in the morning is another very important time to take in protein.
Reason being is during your sleep, you're getting roughly 7 or 8 hours without
protein intake thus you need to break your fast in the morning and make sure to
ingest protein so that those amino acids are available for your muscles.
So in conclusion, it's always a good practice to consume protein every 2 to 3
hours. Most important times being first thing in the morning, and immediately
following a workout. Remember your workouts just part of your equation, recovery
and proper nutrition are the other essential parts of the equation. Make sure
you are getting adequate protein for the day and proper rest. Wishing you all
the best.
