5 Reasons You Might Be Tired of the Gym (And What You Can Do About It)

By Eric leader-Owner/Personal Trainer

Everyone knows about the importance of regular exercise, but getting into the gym consistently is something lots of people struggle with. If you’ve ever signed up for the gym only to stop going a few weeks (or even days later), you can relate. Although the gym is a great place to work out, it can quickly become mundane if you don’t approach it the right way. But how exactly should you make your gym time as productive as possible? Keep reading for five reasons you might be tired of the gym (and what you can do about it).

1. You don’t have a workout plan

Going to the gym when you have no idea what type of exercises you should be doing can be very intimidating. Instead of starting your workout with the mindset that you’ll figure it out when you get to the gym, give yourself a workout plan ahead of time. You can create your own plan based on your personal goals or utilize other resources to find something that works for you.

2. You’d rather work out at home

Although the gym is a great place to exercise, it isn’t the only place where you can get a good workout. If traveling to and from the gym is what has you feeling over it, you should designate a few days where you exercise at home. According to House Method, you could set up a home workout area in your garage or spare room, so you can switch up your routine when you don’t feel like leaving your house.

3. You need someone to keep you motivated

Working out alone can be tough, especially when you already didn’t feel like exercising in the first place. If having to work out by yourself is what’s got you tired of the gym, it’s time to think about getting a friend who can double as your accountability partner and help you reach the goals you’ve set for yourself.

4. You feel bored

If the thought of spending an hour in the gym bores you to death, it’s time to think about ways you can keep yourself focused while you work out. Creating a playlist specifically for the gym is a great way to give yourself a push while you tackle your workout. Your playlist should consist of high-energy, pump-up music that will get you in the mood to exercise as hard as you can. You could also listen to your favorite podcast or watch your favorite show on your smartphone or a mounted TV.

5. Running and weight lifting aren’t your thing

When you walk into the gym, the first items you probably see are weights and treadmills. If these machines don’t interest you, it can be easy to feel like the gym isn’t the right place for your workout. However, there are lots of other exercise options that are perfect for people who don’t love to run and/or lift weights. Try to get a copy of your gym’s class schedule and sign up for any classes that interest you. Many gyms will offer classes like Zumba and kickboxing to provide you with nice alternative workouts.

Being tired of the gym isn’t a feeling that has to last forever. If you stick to the tips above, you’ll realize that exercise can be an awesome experience.
